WCVT In The Community

WCVT Helped Tap Trees At The Green Mountain Audubon Center

Team WCVT spent a day at the Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington in late February helping to prepare for this year’s sugaring season. The crew trekked through the sugar bush with drills in hand and sleds full of buckets and tapped 500+ trees the old-fashioned way. The Audubon Center has a working, traditional maple sugaring operation that produces between 50-75 gallons of syrup each year. Thousands of people visit the Center annually to learn about their wood-fired, bird-friendly process of maple sugaring. SWEET job team!

Stay Alert -PayPal Warns Against Email Scam

If you sell goods online, you'll want to keep an eye out for suspicious activity coming from a scammer who claims to be PayPal. Here's how it
works: An "interested buyer" will contact you and ask you to accept payment through PayPal. You'll then receive an email that looks like it's from PayPal, saying you've received payment. If you check your PayPal account, the money isn't there.

Unfortunately, many people don't take the time to check their PayPal account, send the purchased items, and end up without both the money and the goods (not to mention shipping fees). Skipping the step of checking the PayPal account is understandable, considering the emails saying the payment has been made look legitimate.

Take a closer look, though, and you may see a false sender email address or other red flags giving the scammer away. To protect yourself, examine all emails carefully and always double-check your PayPal account to make sure messages are accurate. You can forward a suspicious email to spoof@paypal.com, and PayPal security experts will examine it and take action if needed.

Short Tutorial / FAQ - What's The Difference Between A Modem And A Router?

Question:  I want to know more about my own home hardware system that was installed by a professional. My first question is, what's the difference between a modem and a router?

Answer: That's an understandable question, considering these two pieces of hardware are both involved with your internet connection, have a similar size and shape, and feature plugs and jacks on the back and flashing lights to indicate they're doing their job.

There are differences, though. A modem connects to a cable/wire from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) that brings in internet data. A different wire that goes from your modem to your computer delivers your internet requests and activity to your computer. Without a modem, you'd have no internet connection.

Each modem connects to only one computer, which is why most people use both a modem and a router. A router connects to your modem and broadcasts your internet signal over a certain distance so that multiple devices can connect to your network. In addition, a router makes it harder for hackers to target any specific computer linked to it, providing built-in security.
