WCVT Works With Community Partners To Open Virtual Living Room in Bristol, Vermont

Ribbon cutting ceremony

The American Legion, Post 19 in Bristol, Vermont is now the proud home of the nation's second "Virtual Living Room®," a space where veterans can use a robust fiber-optic broadband connection to access VA telehealth services. The Virtual Living Room® is a comfortable, private space housed within the American Legion, Post 19 in Bristol and enables local veterans to access telehealth appointments with their VA healthcare provider. We all know that getting easy, convenient access to healthcare can sometimes be a challenge for our veterans in many rural communities. The Virtual Living Room® provides a viable option for Veterans to access the VA telehealth system in a convenient, comfortable, private setting.

Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom (WCVT) enabled the Virtual Living Room® with a high-speed fiber-optic Internet connection capable of serving up to one gigabit per second. According to Eric Haskin, President/CEO of Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom, "We are very proud to be working with our community partners to support our local Veterans here in Vermont. I served in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation (CV-64) and understand firsthand the challenges our veterans face. This is one way we can give back to our local communities and support our veterans by leveraging our gigabit fiber-optic network to help expand access to the VA's ever expanding telehealth initiatives."

The Virtual Living Room® was made possible through an innovative partnership between Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom (WCVT), the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS), CoBank, the White River Junction VA Healthcare System, and the American Legion Post 19. This collaboration is a perfect example of how crucial community partnerships are in meeting the needs of veterans in our rural communities.

Did You Add More Devices? It Might Be Time To Upgrade Your Wi-Fi
If you added more devices this holiday season, it's probably time to look at your Wi-Fi. While the standard Wi-Fi gateways do a pretty good job of covering the average sized home, depending on the number of devices and size, layout, and construction of your home, it may be time to look at a new solution to increase your overall Wi-Fi coverage and performance. Whole Home Wi-Fi from Green Mountain Access uses multiple Access Points to expand coverage to every part of your home and cover all of your devices.

Letters A Year Of Giving Back
Giving back to our communities has always been an important part of who we are at WCVT. It’s in our company’s DNA to give back, not just with our checkbook but with our hearts, hands, and minds. In 2019, over $30,000 was donated to charities, organizations and to those in need through our Contributions Program. In addition to monetary donations, WCVT employees volunteered over 1,100 hours of paid and 1,700 hours of unpaid community service hours. These are some of the organizations we donated to through our Contributions Program in 2019:

• Eunice B. Farr Incentive Awards – six $1,000.00 scholarships awarded to graduating seniors at the 6 public high schools in our serving area.
• Susan Haskin Simms Scholarship
• Vermont Food Bank and local food shelves - $6,000 during the holiday season.
• WCVT Giving Tree
• Virtual Living Room for Veterans
• UVM Children’s Hospital
• Girls on the Run
• Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports
• United Way
• Prevent Child Abuse Vermont
• Volunteer Fire Departments • Backpack Program
• Central Vermont Home, Healthy and Hospice
• Central Vermont Humane Society
• Lupus Foundation of American
• American Cancer Society
• Employee Birthday Contributions

…and many more! A big thank you to everyone for helping to make our communities a better place to live and work. If you know of an organization in our serving area in need, let them know about our Contributions Program. Information and application can be found on our website.

Being a local business means that our customers are also our neighbors and friends. At Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom, we feel strongly that community involvement is not just a nice thing to do; it is the right thing to do. If you have a community service project in the making and are looking for help, contact Lorraine Keener at 496-8379 or via email lkeener@corp.wcvt.com to see if we can lend a hand.
